Swan Lake tells the story of beautiful and innocent Odette, a Princess who has been transformed into a swan under the curse of evil sorcerer Rothbard. Odette can only take human form between midnight and daybreak. The only thing that can break the curse is if someone should swear faithful and undying love to her...
The story unfolds that Odette is happened upon by Prince Siegfried whilst on a hunting trip. He immediately falls in love with her and swears his undying love. Later, whilst at a ball, the sorcerer Rothbart disguises his own daughter Odile as Odette, who charms Siegfried with her bewitching dancing. Thinking she is Odette, Siegfried asks for her hand in marriage.
Siegfried realises his error but it is too late He begs for Odette's forgiveness, which she grants, but she is doomed to remain as a swan forever. In their grief both Odette and Siegfried jump into the icy waters of the lake, followed by Rothbart. Bittersweet and heart wrenching, the final scene culminates with the swan maidens of the lake watching the sun rise as they are freed from Rothbart's curse. Our two lover's have perished for the sake of their pledge to one another, but whilst some versions of the ballet focus on the loss and eternal separation, others suggests that the lovers will be reunited in heaven ever after.
Swan Lake holds such an iconic sway in the imagination of so many of us. It taps into the themes of good vs evil, betrayal and forgiveness. In the figures of Odette and Odile we have two polar opposites, one innocent and pure, the other devious and seductive. These are timeless themes that cannot fail to appeal to our double sided nature.
We like to think there's a little Odette/Odile in all of us, and with the right dress you can bring her to light.
